Committee Description:
The committee addresses the complex political, social, and humanitarian aftermath of the collapse of the Republic of Gilead, a theocratic regime that ruled parts of the former United States through extreme reproductive control, gender-based oppression, and rigid social hierarchy. With Gilead’s dissolution still recent, the revived United States, neighbouring countries, and former citizens of the regime now face urgent questions about justice, reconstruction, and reconciliation. Delegates must confront issues such as accountability for former Commanders, Aunts, and Wives; reparations and protection for former Handmaids and other victims; the legal status and psychological welfare of children separated from their biological families; and the reintegration of refugees who fled to Canada and other regions. Additionally, the committee must consider how to prevent future rises of extremist regimes amid the ongoing global fertility crisis that originally allowed Gilead to gain power. Balancing humanitarian concerns, political stability, and international cooperation, this committee serves as the diplomatic arena where competing narratives of guilt, trauma, security, and national identity must be negotiated to determine an ethical and sustainable post-Gilead future.
