Committee Description: The United Nations Economic and Social Council is one of the principal forums for discussion at the United Nations, established by the UN Charter in 1945. It is the principal platform for concerted action on international economic, social, and environmental issues, and it supplies policy recommendations to member states and the broader UN system. ECOSOC has played a key role in coordinating activities undertaken by specialized agencies, functional commissions, and regional commissions in the area of furthering sustainable development. It contributed to landmark initiatives such as the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 and the Millennium Development Goals in 2000, later to become the foundation for the Sustainable Development Goals introduced in 2015.
